Good advice on reducing #ageism in the age of #Covid_19 from American Psychological Association, including "Remember that older adults are diverse and have intersecting identities." Incredibly diverse in fact: the longer we live, the more different from one another we become. apa.org/topics/covid-1…

"I’m now old enough to know that our lives, like nature itself, go in cycles. If I’m having a bad day, I now understand a secret I never recognized as a young man, that tomorrow is likely to be fine. Never have I felt so alive, nor more grateful to be." nytimes.com/2020/07/28/wel…

@JohnQuiggin In academia related to study of ageing, ‘elderly’ has negative connotations. It presents all people over a certain age as frail/impaired which is not true. Far better to be explicit about the age referring to or say ‘older adults’ or ‘older people’ Ashton Applewhite AAG

I spoke at a conference and they sent me a book of my choice as a speaker gift. (What a great idea!) This was next on my list and I’m so excited to finally make Louise Aronson ‘s Elderhood my next read!

A 92-year old in our community is taking 2 online classes and recently - and unprompted- changed his email signature to include his pronouns. This sums up #lifelonglearning at its finest. #UniversityBasedRetirementCommunities

“younger generations have a huge stake in the current fight by older generations to crush ageism and to build age-friendly institutions. Considering gains in life expectancy, odds are someone who graduated from college this spring will work for 50-70 years nextavenue.org/the-future-of-…

Faculty are 25 times more likely to have a parent with a PhD. I just remembered that when I was a kid, our window AC unit leaked onto our carpet and a giant mushroom appeared overnight. If you're 1st gen and you also had a mushroom in your living room I see you.

designing for “mentor-mentee” relationships is a mistake. A better approach is increasing (qual/quant) of positive intergen exposures with low stakes, particularly in areas of shared interest. If the only result is mutual acceptance and respect, we all win.

“Universities will be forced to start rethinking some fundamental assumptions about their mission, stakeholders and the very definition and profile of a ‘student’ in an era of longevity. What are universities? Who are they for? What are they for? do the answers limit their scope?
