Submission deadline July 15 for a small workshop on the impacts of the opiate epidemic to be held at West Virginia University in October (best time of year, fall foliage and such). We have some funding available (thanks to Arnold Ventures) to cover hotel stays and offset travel.

A great opportunity! And if you want to include a rigorous evaluation of your new program's impacts (which I recommend you do!), Arnold Ventures can fund that. Check out the RFP on our website. Talk to folks at Lab for Economic Opportunities (LEO) and J-PAL North America for help with evaluation plans.

For child abuse researchers out there, child abuse is a crime, and falls into the purview of community safety. If you do rigorous, policy-relevant, causal research focusing on interventions to reduce child abuse check out this RFP!

For those of us with new fac starting this fall, remember what it was like to start anew. There are so many acronyms and so many hidden norms. How can you make those visible for new faculty? One thing I try to do is every time I get a new email, look at it with a newbie in mind

I keep thinking about the diff between parents & non-parents. 60% of the sample had a child. But I don’t see a subgroup analysis based on parenthood. It’s easy to critique (sorry!), but given how parents have responded to cash in other settings, this distinction seems important!

At our school they don’t even call it recess anymore! My first grader’s schedule has 20 minutes of “fresh air time.” I can’t even get my kid outside in 20 minutes, much less back in. They need more play.

Besides workday, my favorite part of this job is the excessively burdensome cybersecurity & IRB protocols for research that is harmless, relies on secondary data analysis & isn’t technically even human subjects research. The semester must be nearing as I begin my griping again.

So happy I was able to listen to this episode of Probable Causation before the semester began! I was able to add it to my syllabus to go with episode 8 on ban the box policies (by the same author!) *chef’s kiss*!
