From 1 November, for the next six months, the Job Support Scheme will protect viable jobs in businesses who are facing lower demand over the winter months due to Covid-19.

1/ The Job Support Scheme will directly support the wages of people in work, giving businesses who face depressed winter demand the option of keeping employees in a job on shorter hours rather than making them redundant.

So for someone working 50% of normal hours. Employer pays 50% + (1/3 of 50%) = 67% Govt pays (1/3 of 50%) = 17% Employer sees pay reduced by (1/3 of 50%) = 17% PS rounding means this doesn't quite add up to 100%

Great to see Asda returning to majority UK ownership for the first time in two decades today. The new owners have already committed to investing over £1 billion in the next three years and increasing the proportion of UK-based suppliers. I wish them the best of luck.

1/ I’m announcing today that I’m expanding the Jobs Support Scheme. Where the coronavirus restrictions legally require business premises to close, in any region or nation of the UK, we will help pay employees’ wages.

We can’t just let the virus take hold. But nor can we blithely fall into another national spring-style lockdown, as the opposition now want to do, without trying everything possible first.
