Had the BEST conversation with a new ESOL pupil who asked how much it cost to borrow a book. I smiled & said there was no cost, that this was one of the best parts of a library - everything is free, with no obligation to spend any money. A world of knowledge/escapism for no cost.

I spent yesterday in North Lanarkshire at two high schools. The librarians were my kind hosts and I saw first hand how important their roles are in maintaining the library space, choosing appropriate stock, guiding pupils to books they might not have chosen, providing a space

for pupils who need a quiet place to retreat to for a while. I was sad to hear that after one librarian is to retire, that no-one is going to be hired to fill their shoes and that the school library service is being reviewed. Cuts are likely to be made of staff and services.

If you want a literate/creative nation, then you have to invest in librarians, books, and the physical space. Functioning and well-stocked school libraries will be only for those schools with money = private schools. It's a total shame.

This week we have Muir St PS visiting for their 2nd #braidhurstreadingschool 'Why Should We Read' transition visit. Can't wait to see their posters & hear their thoughts on reading for pleasure.
