There is now a widespread consensus that Hudson Yards was a great idea. A rare opportunity to find a large brownfield construction opportunity in NYC. There is one more great chance out there! Cover Sunnyside Yards, and create a new thriving secondary CBD district in Queens.

Liam Blank, an urban mobility consultant and chair of the nonprofit City Club’s Transportation Committee, believes that through-running would connect New York’s suburbs more easily, enable more trains to run through Penn Station, and cut down on empty trains idling in the West

The benefits of through-running at Penn Station were understood as early as 1963. Yet, for the next six decades, the region poured billions into highway expansion and fragmented railway planning, failing to solve the core problem.

“The goal is to put the user experience at the forefront,” Blank said. “We have the bones for a very robust rail network; we just don’t really operationally have a system that meets the needs of more of the region’s population.” bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Exciting news on Penn Station: through-running is on the table. Through-running trains would not only make the most use out of valuable space at Penn, it would create a regional system for transportation across the region. (Links at end)

The greatest obstacle to a modern, reliable, and equitable regional rail system is not a lack of money or engineering know-how, but the deeply entrenched and dysfunctional governance structure that prevents progress. This delay is the warning shot for the larger battle at Penn

This diagram is missing the crucial next frame: the landlord of the "cheap old apartment" renovates it and lists it for double the price to capture the new market rate created by the condos next door. The affordability benefit never materializes. The affordable unit is simply

Today Hochul & the MTA confirmed that the planned end-to-end runtime of the IBX has been cut a full 10 min down to 32 and projected ridership is up 41k to 160k/day. This is the power of grade separation and the All Faiths tunnel. Kudos to the Gov & MTA! youtube.com/live/EhaB99v4K…

Terminal stations set you up to fail. They funnel crowds into packed waiting halls. People talk about narrow platforms and a lack of benches. That misses the point. The terminal operation causes the crowding. It builds delay into the schedule. Focus on service, not seating.

Bottom line: Lower fares + simple, frequent service = riders. The CityTicket zones prove it. Most of Long Island is waiting for a fare and service model that actually matches how people travel now.
