An important day in the history of the Palestinian people and our long struggle for freedom and justice after more than a century of the enduring historic injustice rooted in the Balfour Declaration and the decades of systematic denial and oppression of the Palestinian people.

This is a huge shift in the UK’s position. Recognition of a Palestinian state is deeply significant. The government is rightly using that to put conditions on Israel that would drive desperately-needed, real change in the lives of Palestinians at this most horrific of times.

This is what is needed. The war has to end. The hostages have to be released. The settlement expansion must stop. The food and aid must get through. Only a two state solution will do.

My statement on the Prime Minister's announcement that the UK will recognise a Palestinian state.

Recognition and aid are crucial. I have long advocated for the recognition of Palestine, working with international partners to maximise diplomatic impact. We need an immediate ceasefire and a flood of aid into Gaza now.

The conflict in Israel and the OPTs must be resolved with a two-state solution. Yesterday at the United Nations I made clear the UK will work with all our international partners to end the suffering, get aid flooding into Gaza and deliver a more stable Middle East with no role for Hamas.
