For the last 2 years, we have been conducting a randomized controlled trial to see how effective PlaySmart is at educating teens about ways to prevent opioid misuse and mental health concerns. We have under 50 students left to recruit before we meet our 532-participant goal!

Our lab member Lindsey Bonilla had the opportunity to attend the 5th Annual NIH HEAL Initiative Scientific Meeting in Maryland last week! She presented a poster on our work with digital health interventions and participated in a symposium on prevention-focused projects.

Today, we’re highlighting critical data from the 2019 Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey. 7th-12th graders who had used cannabis, or opioids without a doctor’s prescription, reported signs of depression & anxiety more often than those without a history of drug use.

We recently celebrated meeting our recruitment goal of 532 high school students for our ongoing randomized controlled trial! In this study, we are testing the efficacy of our opioid misuse prevention game PlaySmart.

Focus groups are just one of the many research methods we use here in the play2Prevent lab! After conducting focus groups with adolescent participants, we incorporate themes from their responses into the storylines of our serious games. source: cdc.gov/healthyyouth/e…
