Becoming a pro is not a simple task, otherwise everyone would do it. While all the skills, physicality, knowledge and experience are purchased with time. Having a professional mindset can be bought now. And it’s totally free.

The very best athletes handle pressure the best. But it’s a learned skill.

Why not try to learn how to handle it better with a stronger mindset and mental skills.

Try the MindStrong Sport app 👇

Principles of dealing with pressure:

1. Notice distractions
2. Understand what you can control

Sport teaches you skills about life.

• The environment does not care about you
• Success is not guaranteed
• People will judge you
• Failure is inevitable

To succeed in both it requires you to focus on controlling what you can control.

Everyone wants to be excellent at something up until they realise what’s really involved.

They overwhelmed at what it takes and the slow progress

Funny thing is, it really comes down to two simple things; Commitment & Consistency.

Keep showing up, regularly.

The pro athlete you're comparing yourself with has been doing it for years, whereas you're early into your journey.

So why compare yourself to them? Perspective.

If I hear a coach say “they won’t make it”.

It makes me smile.

I was told that.

Others believed it.

In Sept 2010, I signed a professional contract.

Don’t let one person’s opinion of you determine your future.

This year, I've spoken to countless Directors of Sport at schools across the country.

And I always ask the same question:

What are some of the biggest obstacles you face?

Unanimously, they answer:

Parents trying to get involved.

Question:

Would you take advice on parenting an athlete from someone who is not a parent but has been an athlete (with parents involved)?

I learnt this as a pro cricketer. It’s your 2nd spell that defines you. Can you pick yourself up. Can you do it when you’re sore, aching, tired. Can you muster the mental strength to come back again, even if everything is against you.

Those are the valuable players.

Instead of comparing yourself to other people, learn from them.

Ask yourself 'what is it I can take from that'

Meditation isn’t about getting rid of your thoughts. There’s no way of doing that. It’s purely about noticing what exists in that moment, and then making the choice on what you give your attention. The more you pay attention to your experience, the more you can do about it.
