The "curriculum" isn't something we buy. The standards ARE the curriculum. WHAT we teach. WHO we teach need 2 things from the resources chosen for the classroom. They need to be: Rigorous for them Relatable to them Resources bridge the WHAT & WHO when we design HOW we teach.

"Not motivated" "Doesn't want to improve" "Not interested in learning" "Refuses to try" All things we've heard teachers say about kids. Also, all things teachers have said about other teachers. Adults shouldn't expect things from kids we aren't willing to do ourselves.

Some free classroom management tools: Smiles Greetings at the door Respect Authenticity Grace Conversations about non-academic things Gratitude Apologies Empathy Free stuff is good. Free stuff that works is even better.

As a teacher, knowing my content helps kids learn. (Effect size=0.13, less than a year's learning potential) Knowing my kids & connecting with them helps kids learn a whole lot more. Know your content AND your kids.

Want something besides rules or expectations posted in your room? Have learners decide what they need from each other in class. Turn those into collective commitments. They made them. They hold themselves accountable. Now, have them decide what they need from you. Do the same

Classroom discussions (ES=0.82) are a powerful teaching strategy significantly accelerating learning. They are NOT simply a teacher question followed by responses. They encourage deeper understanding, critical thinking, & collaborative learning among learners.

Quiz Idea: Give kids 4 question multiple choice assessment BUT don't ask them to choose the BEST answer INSTEAD Ask them to choose 2-3 wrong answers & explain why they're wrong I can close my eyes & pick a correct answer. But it takes knowing something to prove it's wrong.

Kids don't like making mistakes because we've made them negative. If no one ever made mistakes, then no one would ever learn anything. Mistakes aren't "bad." What is bad is how kids feel when they make them. We need to flip that.

Adults in school, We need to watch what we say... With our: Smiles Expressions Reactions Attitudes Actions Corrections Comments Silence And all the other little ways we communicate. Learners feeling disliked has an ES= -0.26 or half a year's loss. This costs us nothing.

I am so appreciative Jason’s focus on sharing the data point that aligns to the instructional focus shared! It helps us focus on why what we do really matters.

Designing learning is like baking chocolate chip cookies We start w/ a proven recipe- key ingredients for effective Tier 1 learning for all. Within that there's room to innovate. We can tweak a cookie recipe w/ creative touches, we can adapt & enrich a learning framework.

Head knowledge of the content is good (ES= 0.13) Heart knowledge of the kiddos is better (ES=0.62) Positive relationships w/ kids are nearly 5x more effective on learning than knowing the subject you're teaching. Are we spending 5x the time on connections than content?

That kid's behavior that's the straw that breaks the camel's back... The reason for that kid's behavior might just break your heart instead. Sometimes acting up is a kid needing someone to listen up.

I want a classroom where kids will jump without hesitation, knowing the adult in the room is there to catch them. I want a school where teachers will jump without hesitation, knowing the leader in the building is there to catch them. Imagine what we'll reach in those jumps
