a community member needed some help today. he was disoriented, tired and dehydrated. there were two cop cars on our street, talking to him out of their car windows. since i don't like cops hanging around my neighborhood hassling my neighbors i went out there with some water...

i ignored the cops and gave him the water. he was clearly dehydrated. he was grateful for the help and was ok with me grabbing his bike and getting him away from the cops. i set him up in my yard where we got him more water (he crushed nearly four water bottles) and food.

i asked him if it was ok to call 211. he was fine with it and they showed up in 30 mins. they were able to give him some clean clothes, some medical supplies and some more food. it's not hard to be a good neighbor and it's also really easy to not call the cops.

i had to go leave to go pick up my kid and he wasn't there when i got back. i don't know if the cops just stumbled across him or if someone called them on a guy lying down in the grass but you can intervene for the better in these situations. the cops will only make it worse.

We used to have some hope it would be people before politics, but David Eby Jennifer Whiteside and others who know little to nothing about mental health and addictions have decreed involuntary care in draconian environments. This is politics at its worst. Not to mention axing the tax.

Hey!! David Eby Jennifer Whiteside As has been said, there are not even enough beds for voluntary addictions treatment much less more beds for involuntary anti-evidence based treatment. We are not stupid!

Our targets are problematically set on addiction and public safety, whereas the root issues are actually: ✅a toxic drug supply ✅homelessness ✅poverty ✅collapsing healthcare system Involuntary care fixes none of the above.

There’s no capacity to even make this happen. Hospitals are short staffed. Flu season and staff mandates are incoming. We don’t have the infrastructure for a voluntary addiction treatment service let alone an involuntary one.

To recap: ❌involuntary care is proven to be ineffective in treating addiction ❌involuntary care is proven to cause more harm than good And here’s another important reminder: People who use drugs do not lose their human rights due to their drug use.

Zoë Dodd We know some of our loved ones who were struggling mightily with mental health & addiction but we’re not a danger to anyone, would have been traumatized, frightened, & felt intense shame at being sent to a prison. The stats for forced recovery are not good-did anyone check?
