Visiting beautiful Kenya for our honeymoon and stumbled upon this Painted Ringlet (Aphysoneura pigmentaria) playing peekaboo in the bamboo forest under Mt. Kenya. Its caterpillars feed on bamboo.

After ~7 yr of work, it's finally out! We present a molecular phylogeny of butterflies sampling >90% of genera & >2000 spp. Butterflies emerged ~100 million yr ago in North America and first fed on legumes. Thanks to all 87 co-authors from 28 countries! rdcu.be/dcaVU

A very interesting (transitional?) dark morph tiger swallowtail found in our vegetable tunnels today. I’ve seen dark morph tigers before but never one quite like this!

🦋 First butterfly of the season today in Southern Wisconsin! An eastern comma. Bonus pink-spotted lady beetle from yesterday. Pretty dang early to be seeing these critters out and about!

Picked up these native plants today from Dustin Demmer! Very excited to put all these species in the ground but I think I’m most enthralled with the hoary puccoon, one of which is already flowering. Couldn’t resist woodland phlox and New Jersey tea. Bonus: Indian paintbrush! ☺️🌱
