The past seven days have been very intense but quite enjoyable. I met great new people at the Brightfocus workshop, saw old friends and mentors #SfN2022 , and had my first research talk there. PPR submission next :)

I just learn that one of my synaptic heroes and author of one of my favorite books passed. RIP Chuck! Famed Neuroscientist Charles Stevens Dies at 88 the-scientist.com/news-opinion/f…

Phosphorylation of alpha-synuclein at Ser-129 is a pathologic hallmark of Parkinson's+. Normally, only ~ 4% is Ser129P, so almost all studies have focused on pathology. Surprisingly, we found that Ser129P has a role in normal a-syn function: biorxiv.org/content/10.110… 🧵👇1/8

Day 23 of great biology papers. "The genetics of Caenorhabditis elegans," by Sydney Brenner (1974). 7 years, 300 worm mutants, 100 genes. This paper kicked off Brenner's long-term aim: To map how every gene affects the "development and functioning" of a multicellular organism.

Interesting: Leonardo Parra-Rivas Subhojit Roy, MD, PhD & colleagues present a role for α-synuclein Ser129P at synapses, where activity-induced Ser129P triggers the interaction of α-syn with synaptic proteins leading to attenuation of neurotransmitter release cell.com/neuron/fulltex…
