I think more often about the harm of assuming children *don’t* have background experiences...a compelling read that helped me think about the value of deeply teaching domains of knowledge AND learning about students’ experiences to inform that teaching.

A great read. Thinking about the accessibility of students’ experiences when I reached the call for systematic and sequential building of background knowledge. Seems important to invite connections to the knowledge students have but don’t associate with school.

Major news to celebrate: For the first time, Penn GSE is #1 in U.S. News & World Report’s 2022 rankings for graduate schools of education. usnews.com/best-graduate-…

3% = huge drop. Few yrs ago, we ran an analysis: found that enrollment loss >0.75% was financially destabilizing for districts. Very disruptive to strategy. Districts may want to work quickly to get kids back. Where kids are gone for good, might use some ARP$ to help rightsize.

A huge opportunity to catalyze and sustain innovation for districts that use their immediate response to lay the groundwork for the kind of future they wanted anyhow.

Curious to hear what people think. Why have business seen huge changes is streets b/c of Covid but not schools?? Why are schools not pivoting to utilize street space differently around them??

“…the equity story is positive, if incomplete.” A great reminder that what we do as educators works, and that we must do more of it.

School attendance zone boundaries (AZBs) can play a critical role in the integration or segregation of suburban neighborhood schools. Read more about the history and case studies here: ow.ly/IKRq50MSf1R

NEW: The conventional wisdom is that parents have grown increasingly furious with public schools. But it's actually people without school-age children who are particularly skeptical of public schools, multiple surveys show. chalkbeat.org/2023/7/25/2380…
