Too much talk of presupposes that people know the basics about it. As
UNICEF/Gallup data released at today show, these assumptions don't reflect reality. 🧵changingchildhood.unicef.org/stories/the-ot…

We just published of global extreme to 2023. Globally, we are back to pre-pandemic rates. This means we have lost 3 years in the fight against poverty. Also, poverty in the poorest countries still exceeds pre-pandemic levels.

This is an important test for the foreign aid community. Lead poisoning is more prevalent, and its effects more damaging and wide-ranging, than was understood only a few years ago. Current aid spending on it is ~$0. That ought to change immediately.

Sounds important, but impossible to tell whether these numbers reflect a genuine shift in investments or mere rebadging - especially in light of recent work by Guido Núñez-Mujica Vijaya Ramachandran @Morris_ScottA. OECD Development has to play a stronger role here.

Many African finance ministers are caught between a rock and a hard place - and it’s the future of Africa’s children that’s being shortchanged.

Sorry to say I see this as glass half empty: After decades of near-uninterrupted progress, the global poverty rate is unchanged from 3-4 yrs ago. And while poverty is falling again, those lost yrs won't be recovered - the trajectory is permanently altered.

Frustrating listening to this The New Yorker podcast on climate change & kids' mental health, the main message being that their anxiety is justified.

Of course it cites this study (published in The Lancet) containing the most leading question of all time.

An elegant Foreign Affairs essay, and an even better podcast, pulling together Lant Pritchett's ideas on technology and migration. Especially like the notion of low or 'core' skilled workers as the world's most abundant resource.

The confusion Matthew Yglesias discusses here - where estimates of the negative impact of climate change relative to a baseline world are misinterpreted as estimates of an absolute deterioration in conditions - is everywhere in discussions of global poverty

A searing lament of the modern world's treatment of refugees, in which rich countries abdicate global commitments and pay third countries to keep the problem at bay, regardless of the often tragic human consequences. By Lydia Polreen

This is a great paper! But I don't think we can conclude that awareness of climate change is solved.

Our UNICEF Gallup study found large shares of young & old who hadn't heard of climate change or couldn't correctly define it.

So many demographic milestones / inflection points occurring all at once:

- Global pop > 8bn
- China pop ↓
- India pop > China pop
- US life expectancy ↓, maternal & child mortality ↑
- Peak child
- Total fertility rate <2.1 in majority of countries

What did I miss?!
