Safety brief in Derby today, and by far the best way to get there was by cycle! The timing of the hourly train service meant that I'd have to have left home 5 minutes earlier to catch that, and who'd want to drive at that time of day?! The scenic way home afterwards too!

The future of our industry relies on knowledgeable, experienced and (most of all) passionate railway engineers like Gareth Dennis. It's a dark day for us all if this is the reward for raising a genuine and very serious safety concern affecting many, many rail users.

A change from the usual procession of 170s, my fairly unusual visitor to Worksop nowadays kicks off 9½ hours of button pushing. 1L09/1R80 to Norwich and back now awaits for me.

Posted primarily as a celebration of an excellent bit of parallel-move regulating earlier (sad, I know), but also for the benefit of those who seem to think that we just follow signs and push buttons and don't actually need to know where we're going...

Those bemoaning train drivers' "four day week" – I'd love to see them try to do five of these in a week. Although, of course, we often do a run of 7 or more anyway.

You know we're all done for, working people in all sectors, when even union reps are bemoaning some workers being paid "too much" rather than seeking to address the real issue, that others aren't being paid anywhere near enough. Strength is in unity – aspire to better!

The only booked move into the sidings at Boston for us Nottingham bods. My unit put to bed, a quick walk back to nob up the hand points for the other road, and now to await the pass ride back.

I was looking forward to a trip to Liverpool today for the first time in several weeks – but a last-minute phone call from Rosters, and out East I go again...

It's so refreshing to have an MP who genuinely knows his stuff, and can construct a coherent argument to defend a controversial but well-considered position. And then you come to the replies 🤦‍♂️
