Alleluia, Christ is risen! This Easter Sunday, here’s Christ rising from his tomb; three guards sleep and one wakes up to adore him. The guards only appear in Matthew, where, at the sight of the angel rolling back the stone, they “shook and became like dead men”. [MS 368 f. 12r]

On Good Friday, one of the holiest days in the Church’s calendar, Christians remember Jesus’ crucifixion. The amount of gold in this 13th-century depiction reflects the significance of the event, as Jesus sacrificed himself to atone for the sins of humankind. [MS 1370 f. 4r]

On Maundy Thursday, after the Passover meal, Jesus shared bread and wine with his disciples to represent his body and blood. Christians celebrate the Eucharist as a memorial of Jesus’ death and resurrection, and to remember his continued presence with us. [E560.H6 [*], p. 158]

Happy New Year! (Lady Day Dating). Even though the Feast of the Annunciation has been moved due to Lent, today still marks what was known as ‘Lady Day’, which was the beginning of the medieval New Year. In England, this practice continued until 1751! [ZZ]1556.07

On Palm Sunday, the Church celebrates Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, where crowds waved palm leaves. Rather than fresh leaves, many churches distribute palm crosses. This 1962 photo shows children queuing up to receive palm crosses at St Peter’s Church, Brighton. [CIO/PHO/NEG/145]

Shelf-checking brings welcome surprises. We came across this Psalter which belonged to Archbishop Parker! He wrote his name on the title page in distinctive red crayon. The notes on the flyleaves are possibly in Parker’s hand (more work to be done!). [E1425.G7] The Parker Library

Today we celebrate the Scottish poet Robbie Burns, who was born in 1759.

Our copy of 'Poems, chiefly in the Scottish dialect' by Burns, has the word 'skinking' (as in 'Skinking ware') mistakenly composed as 'stinking ware'.

Happy !

Today is the Feast of the Baptism of Christ.
In this depiction of the scene from a 15th century English book of hours, the landscape is beautifully represented with a silver river, and distant tree-topped hills. (MS 459, f92v)

Today is the feast of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, who was martyred in 1170.
This miniature depicting Becket's martyrdom comes from the St Alban's Chronicle (MS 6, f. 136 verso) probably written by an English scribe in the 15th c. and decorated in Bruges.
