First night of Jenůfa Royal Ballet and Opera. I’ve been an opera fanatic for around 40 years. Tonight was one of the most extraordinary performances I’ve experienced. Phenomenal singing, playing, conducting, production. A truly great, incredibly moving, evening of theatre. If in doubt, go!

Second look at Jenůfa Royal Ballet and Opera - shattering stuff. Guth's expressionist production feels tighter, more coherent this time. Corinne Winters gives a phenomenally integrated performance as Jenůfa. Voice, phrasing, words, movement all serving her character, utterly authentic.

There are times (tonight Royal Ballet and Opera was one of them) when I come from a performance of Jenufa thinking it is the greatest opera ever written: the humanity & understanding of the composer, the detail and intensity of the piece combined with heartfelt & heartbreaking performances

Outstanding performance of Janáček’s Jenůfa at Royal Ballet and Opera tonight. Corinne Winters, Karita Mattila 🏴‍☠️🇫🇮🇺🇸🇺🇦🇪🇺, Thomas Atkins and 𝐍𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐲 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 all excellent. Orchestra and chorus absolutely superb under Jakub Hrůša, Royal Opera’s Music Director Designate. Only 2 shows left until 1 Feb.

Corinne Winters & Karita Mattila were both astonishing as Jenufa & her stepmother, especially in the turning point of Act 2 and the confession and forgiveness in Act 3. I was reduced to tears on both occasions, helped by the intensity of Royal Ballet and Opera orchestra’s playing under Hrusa

Fabulous rbo #Jenufa this evening. ⁦Karita Mattila 🏴‍☠️🇫🇮🇺🇸🇺🇦🇪🇺⁩ brilliant and memorising especially in act 3. Enjoyed Atkins števa too. Not my favourite production but still raw and brilliant.

Tonight is the final Royal Ballet and Opera Jenůfa. A brilliant general rehearsal today Het Concertgebouw assisting inspirational Karina Canellakis. I can’t wait for our performance on Saturday. It’s been joy and honour working on this transcendent and shattering opera with such a brilliant conductor orchestra chorus and cast. 🙏🏻⭐️🇳🇱

So many memories. Prague Conservatoire on the diagonal, Rudolfinum with the Dvořák Hall next to it. Study years, concerts, striving. Now back attending rehearsals under Jakub Hrůša’s direction with the Czech Philharmonic and Student Youth Orchestra. Another turn of the spiral.🌀
