Really fascinating to visit Wakehurst and the Millennium Seed Bank Millennium Seed Bank UK Team yesterday to discuss their research agenda from seeds to ecosystems to Leverhulme Centre for Nature Recovery , thanks ed ikin and colleagues!
Trying to find trees in LiDAR data? Problem: 100s of algorithms but hard to assess their accuracy Solution: use segmented TLS to label trees in ALS, then compare algorithms. Paper: doi.org/10.1016/j.jag.… James Ball Phil Wilkes Kim Calders Mathias Disney @Silvilaser23
Are you attending British Ecological Society's conference this year? Interested in how #lidar can help answer your #ecology questions? Want some guidance on starting out with #3D tree data? 👉Then 'Intro to lidar for forest ecology' is the #BES2023 workshop for you! GIF credit Phil Wilkes
Love forests? like lasers? excited about radiative transfer? me, Niall Origo NPL and Phil Wilkes wakehurst are looking for a new #phd student to study structural dynamics with multitemporal laser scanning Cambridge Geography : nercdtp.esc.cam.ac.uk/projects/ce516…
PART 1 //🐝🌿Our #pollination pioneers have been investigating bee populations across Wakehurst, with insect counts and transect walks, to find out which plants and habitats provide the most benefits. Tune in for part 2 soon 👀 This research is funded by Mount Anvil and Partners
🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳 For those that need to segment trees from terrestrial LiDAR data, we present #tls2trees! Tested on 6 ha of Wytham Woods, we extracted 7615 trees using Centre for Environmental Data Analysis HPC! Try for yourself github.com/tls-tools-ucl/… 🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳
🚨FULLY FUNDED #PhD 🚨 on laser scanning (TLS, UAV-LS, ALS) to study carbon and biodiversity dynamics in regenerating uplands in the UK Cambridge Geography! Like lasers⚡️ trees🌳 biodiversity🐞 fieldwork? Come and join us Centre for Landscape Regeneration jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/44246/ (UKRI home fees only)
It has been a great year of scanning for team 🌳 TLS TREES 🌳 🌳 back in May we embarked on the Woodland Trust🌳 funded #SCATTER project. One of our faves was Wyesham Oak, Monmouth, here reimagined for 🎄🎅 Sketchfab: skfb.ly/oOHrP
🌲🌲some great coverage of our UK redwoods paper this week by Rebecca Morelle 🌲🌲 Thanks to all coauthors UCL Geography Kew Science KewGIS Find your local redwood redwoodworld.co.uk/locations.htm
We’ve been working in the #wetwoodland at Wakehurst today installing dipwells for hydrological monitoring as part of the Wet Woodlands Research Network research network and supporting Steph Batten (she/her)’s PhD. I’m excited to see what the data show!
Branches were first stripped of their 🌿 then scanned in high-resolution. Full details of methods can be found in doi.org/10.1111/2041-2… Methods in Ecology and Evolution
Quote of the day from Wakehurst ecosystem observatory launch: Trees are such good pollen and nectar sources that we should think of them as ‘sky meadows’! Highlight of the day was the wet woodland plot - see 📸 Thanks Phil Wilkes for inviting Woodland Trust🌳
