Vortex formation can be visualized using smoke rings! Sohum Kapadia from Clark University demonstrates how vortices form – one of the most popular demonstrations at #SquishyScienceSunday. Everyone wanted to try it! 🤩

Complex Matter & Nonlinear Physics Lab lost honorary member Abdul Azeem Kudrolli lawyer, author, translator of poetry, and a life long student of physics on June 7. He advocated the primacy of knowledge and creativity while fighting for the underdog till the very end. His love for humanity touched many.

These crumpled structures would repeatedly fold along the same creases when crushed cyclically was a major surprise to those of us trained to think that nonlinearly leads to chaotic behavior. But that is not all to the story.

Camera obscura at the Virupaksha Temple constructed around 1440AD in Hampi India is amazing. An inverted image of the gateway pictured forms an inner wall in the complex after passing through the "pin hole". Not aware of an older existing example if this was not added later.

Famed granite columns in the Vijaya Vittala Temple in Hampi, India make a range of sounds corresponding to Indian instruments and music scale. Needs a clear explanation for the wide range of sounds they produce. They are not hollow and are roughly similar in length diameter.

Check out our new preprint on bundling architecture in elastic filaments where we investigate the formation of helical multifilament bundles and the torque required to achieve them as a function of applied twist. arxiv.org/abs/2501.04650

Blackworms are observed to be dynamically trapped at concave corners. Clark graduate student Sohum Kapadia reports a kinematic model as well as simulations to explain the observations in a new preprint: arxiv.org/abs/2501.10783
