Some people get distressed when those of other political stripes agree with them about getting kids to read. Friend, don't make it harder than it has to be. Principles+Purpose > Party+Partisanship.

A mentee saw a twitter thread and asked advice on a "turnaround" job as principal. My response: Do you get exercise? Sleep? How's the relationship with family. You drink water? Ailing parents? Spiritual life? Finances? Have your basic stuff together b4 even thinking about it.

Good points made in a recent convo about student privacy that, legally and ethically, grades/work shouldn't be public. Not debating. Just noting the many ways EVERYone knows who's struggling. Loudspeaker Being in office Detention Voice In-school suspension Seating chart Etc...

Last week to a room of principals: "The biggest thing you can do for a 5th grade teacher is make sure the 4th grade classrooms are solid. Keep the 'thank you' cards, and do your job. This impacts their health, peace, home relationships, and opportunity to be effective at work. "

Things students love hearing: "I respect and admire how hard you work." "Your effort and perseverance inspire me to be a better teacher." "I wish your family could see you right now." "Thank you for not quitting or hiding when things get tough." "Thank you for your leadership"

Positive things for students: 1) Find elders the kid+parents love/respect: grandparent, minister, janitor, old teacher. 2) Get parents' ok to give good news. 3) Call: "Mr Jones, Sam's showing great poise, character, effort, discipline and focus today." 4) Hand them the phone.
