If you're a principal whose system doesn't provide enough planning time for teachers, be creative. Offer "Extended Contracts", swap out mtgs, and talk with the union rep to figure it out. Planning time is a must. Otherwise, reading instructing will not consistently reach all kids

Glad to see this NCTQ Clinical Practice (student teaching) Action Guide out! I think there is a lot of potential to improve teacher quality through more effective preservice experiences and this guide provides evidence about what's known about these. clinicalpracticeactionguide.nctq.org

If school systems prioritized what works and examined the evidence of and conditions for success, they could avoid the senseless fumbles. Not just tutoring, and not just Detroit. But it's good to hear board members asking questions about effectiveness.

Some politicians give "education takes" so empty, distracting, and unserious that I just wish they'd stop talking about it. Sloganeering and platitudes aren't helpful when we're trying to save our kids. Literacy is a civil right. Get serious or move along.

As a young teacher, I would often spend my preparation time sitting in rooms of "Master teachers"- just watching and listening. It was the best, free training I could get New teachers, find sources of inspiration and grounding. Fortify your mind/spirit with examples of success.

Despite movies, podcasts, articles about the reading crisis, the status quo still has a firm grip on children, educators. and Higher Ed. Keep learning, growing, and teaching. “The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, but to the one that endures til the end."

The "calm down" industry is real. People spend money and exert power, trying to get kids to just calm down, sit still, and be quiet. How about this... stop lobotomizing children. Discipline, focus, and excellence are habits to be developed. But it can't be about ego and power.

When you stand on principles, not just party or organizational platform, you may be stunned to learn who you have common with. What you do with that dissonance is a matter of character, integrity, and an indicator of how important the "cause" was to you in the first place.
