A Budget whose tax cuts give 2x more to the PM than to minimum wage workers, has $2.9bn in tax cuts for landlords, and excludes many poor families from many initiatives, will officially maintain or worsen child poverty rates. Unacceptable. 1/

Social housing only gets $140m for running costs of 500 homes a year, to be built by NGOs. Labour had taken a Nats set-up that was *selling* state houses and ramped it up to deliver 2,000-plus a year. Nats seem to be scaling *back* ambition. 4/

Nicola Willis had pledged 1,000 state houses per year for Auckland alone; Chris Bishop promised last year to build so much state and social housing that he'd clear the 25,000-strong waiting list. This looks an awful lot like broken promises. 5/5

Budget 2024 is out and it delivered tax cuts as promised in the election campaign. It was funded with spending cuts and increased borrowing. The spending relative to GDP is useful to understand. See thread below for the high level numbers.

Joe Biden said, “Don’t tell me what you value, show me your budget and I’ll tell you what you value”. This Budget shows the values of this Government - ideological wants before real need. This Budget fails the most important test going, will it help deliver a better Aotearoa. A🧵

Today Stuff revealed that OIA requests show the government instructed oncologists NOT to place patients into a free early access programme for cancer drug Keytruda. They also revealed the PM's claims that his government had worked for months on cancer drug policy were false.

Jenna Lynch reports that despite the government's claims that the cancer drug funding was stopped by a communications failure, official documents "paint a very different picture."
