Finished reading 'Piranesi' last night and it was one of the most wonderful books I've ever read. Recommend a zillion times!!
"The Beauty of the House is immeasurable; its Kindness infinite."
19. Compound interest is amazing.
It works for money, but it also works for skills and habits.
The cliches are true. Every time you do something beneficial, it becomes a little easier to do it the next time.
Every action is like a vote for the kind of person you want to be.
#amquerying friends, i edited more than 300 queries last year (several not to completion because i was ghosted) and helped at least 21 people get at least one pages request.
five got agents.
so, advice:
okay y'all, you ready? hear me out: ⭐️new adult⭐️. it's time we make new adult a thing! like, officially!
give me all those 18-30 y/o protagonists. those messy feelings of becoming your own person, and dealing with deep and serious but exciting and mature situations.
it really amazes me how much better my writing became once i allowed myself to be self-indulgent. oh, i think this backstory element is cool & funky? i'm attributing it to my MC. oh, i like quirky fashion? a character now has weird earrings.
LET YOURSELF WRITE THINGS FOR FUN!!!
J.Lurid Brandon Sanderson has a writing course for novels uploaded to youtube. I also have a book on Manga writing by Hirohiko Araki (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure) that's actually a decent read for writing in general. Before all that I was just inspired by Michael Crichton & Stephen King. >
I don't think I've ever sat down to write & thought "I hope I write something publishable." Instead, I want to write something interesting, unique, memorable, engaging, exquisite, visceral, & after all that, if it is publishable, icing on the cake.
Something we don’t talk about in regards to taking on writing as a career is that in between stage. When you’ve been working on your books for years but don’t yet have an agent or book deal, and have been telling people “I’m writing a book! It’s going to happen!” 1/4
If you have the privilege to meet with agents or editors before you decide who to work with, one of the most important questions to ask is what books they think your work is in conversation with - something wise @ginathechung taught me (she teaches me everything fwiw). THREAD
Thank you so much to the incredible Porter House Review and the amazing Sam Downs for giving this story a home - I appreciate it so much and it has been such a lovely journey!
WRITERS! Stop creating rules for yourselves:
-You don't have to write every day
-Not being published in a year isn't a failure
-Having to do multiple rounds of revisions is common
-No one is looking over your shoulder and judging you
-All that matters is that you keep writing
