She softly sings an ancient Cornish lullaby. Next to her boney-bare feet, she has laid a child’s fishing net and next to it, a small key. Standing in the dusk, she sees the tide coming in. The waves wait with her.

She is wearing a wide-brimmed, straw hat and is naked except for a pair of shorts and the cold air that has laid a frost on the window glass. Her arms are crossed, arthritic claws holding each elbow forming an empty cradle across her breasts.

A woman stands alone in an upstairs bay window of a weather-beaten detached house. Her eyes, hidden behind thick-rimmed sunglasses, scan the infinite darkness of the sea that lies beyond the pebble beach. Waves of wind carry the sound of shifting stones up into her room.
