Hoult’s take on Luthor - and I don’t blame him for this - is just the shallow surface level cover version of that. It’s malice and stupidity. (For an ostensibly smart guy, “Superman” spends a lot of time making Luthor seem dumb.) It really squanders Hoult. It gives him nothing.

Niklander I do wonder how much better that take on the character would be received if it were Spacey in a white three-piece monologuing about “waving daisies at a reviewing stand” or how “no man in the sky intervened when I was a boy to deliver me from Daddy's fist and abominations.”

Niklander (I admire Eisenberg’s performance a great deal, in large part because he’s earnestly approaching the character as if he’s the first person to play this new character who didn’t exist before 2016. But I suspect it’s that very thing that upsets a lot of people.)

None of these people actually thought this movie would make a billion dollars. Fans and pundits just use that talking point for every movie they want to be successful. As if they can incept the idea into people’s minds so that it somehow becomes a reality.
