The narrative linking Japan’s stagnation since 1991 to its financial crisis is largely a myth, more recently discussed in this episode of Dwarkesh Podcast. Japan’s growth performance is almost entirely explained by poor demographics. See Table 1 of my paper with Gustavo Ventura


Jesus Jesús Fernández-Villaverde spells out implications of our joint paper with Wen Yao quite clearly and much more eloquently than I could. Japan is no economic disaster in terms of growth rates, after properly accounting for demographics. It is easy.





Great post by Jesús Fernández-Villaverde Fertility is declining very fast in Latin America. By now, all big countries in LATAM have fertility rates (TFR) below replacement. This surely implies that Americas as a whole are below replacement. A new world, indeed.
