Threats can sometimes reduce tariffs on us, but that is not the main strategy pursued by Trump. Most often threats lead to higher tariffs on us or to fake deals like with Vietnam where tariffs on us are reduced but we still charge Americans 20% to buy VN’s products.

Oh, I forgot the biggest drawback of tariffs. They increase prices on American consumers and stoke inflation. There are so many downsides to tariffs, it’s hard to keep track of them all.

But the Russians have those great tokens that force shoppers to return shopping carts. (They exist all over Europe of course, but guess that was not known).

Reminder: the US has a FREE TRADE AGREEMENT w S. Korea, signed by the President (GWB) & implemented into LAW by Congress, & TRUMP HIMSELF signed a mini-deal w/ SK in 2018. Now ALL SK imports get a 25% tariff - for now. NO incentive for SK (or anyone else) to negotiate with him

The short answer is because the French Revolution spawned socialism while the American Revolution gave rise to classic liberalism and American conservatism. American intellectuals tend not to like the latter.

As I warned, Trump just imposed an additional 25% tariffs on imports from South Korea and Japan. As I also guessed early on all the talk of nations begging Trump for trade deals was BS. Consumers need to brace for much higher prices and get use to higher interest rates.

A 25% tariff on Japan and Korea will make it more expensive to produce goods in the USA. 47% of US imports from Japan are capital goods. 43% of US imports from Korea are capital goods. Capital goods = "goods that are used in producing other goods"

Trump’s interpretation of and playing with tariffs are simply ridiculous. That is not a word to be used lightly but frankly it fits here. What he is doing makes no economic or foreign policy sense at all. It’s just a vanity project that is harming Americans big time.

Every word of this purported history is false. Neoliberalism, or neuliberalismus, was coined in the early 1920s as a pejorative for the marginalist school, and was widely used as such in Germany by Marxists and Nazis in an attempt to discredit classical liberal economics.

The Chinese military employed a laser targeting a German aircraft in the EU operation #ASPIDES. Endangering German personnel & disrupting the operation is entirely unacceptable. The Chinese ambassador was summoned to the Federal Foreign Office today.

If Trump had the kind of normal NSC review process existing since Eisenhower, this would not have happened. A reversal is a mistake. It shows a lack of competence and suggests they don’t know what they are doing. Not good in national security.

The isolationists in the White House keep losing. Turns out the world is more complex and interconnected than their mythology would have us believe. x.com/i/broadcasts/1…

Experience and psychology tells me that Trump will eventually go back to Putin and abandon Ukraine yet again. But if he doesn’t it may be momentous. So watch this space for the next week. We’ll see if it’s a true change or just more of the same jig-jag for headlines.
