Only one(!) person has ever won both an Olympic medal and a Nobel Prize. Philip Noel-Baker won silver in the 1500m in Antwerp in 1920, then the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on nuclear disarmament in 1959. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_No…

The first uses of El Niño (1896) and La Niña (1981) in written English are separated by nearly 85 years. The latter, in Guillen et al., was quite incidental! "Negative anomalies of less than 2°C have also negative effects on the primary production (‘La Niña’?)."

Rainfall forecast from the ECMWF IFS for the next four days: just as the depression dies over Gujarat, a new one forms off the coast of Andhra Pradesh

I've noticed this line convection developing along the coast the last few days. Seems to spin up at about 1pm, then grows and moves inland and dumps rain over Kolkata and Kharagpur at about 3pm. Is this a common feature of the monsoon? I've never seen it before!
