🇲🇼Malawi’s reserves are thin, dollars scarce—yet imports rose in H1 2025 (y/y). Beyond exports, aid and remittances, the gap was likely filled by short-term liabilities—mainly supplier credit and rising arrears.

🇲🇼The Reserve Bank of Malawi has a solvency problem. In June 2025 it held just $133m in foreign assets against $1.319bn in foreign liabilities — net –$1.186bn. Coverage ratio: 0.10 (down from 0.20 since 2022). 👉 This means it cannot meet all FX commitments.

Based on RBM data, 🇲🇼Malawi is caught in a vicious cycle: the government runs large deficits and finances them through heavy domestic borrowing, draining liquidity from banks. To prevent a breakdown of the financial system, the Reserve Bank is forced to inject massive emergency
