When we get to AGI, it will have come slowly, not overnight. A NeurIPS Outstanding Paper award recipient, Are Emergent Abilities of Large Language Models a Mirage? (by Rylan Schaeffer, Brando Miranda, Sanmi Koyejo) studies emergent properties of LLMs, and concludes: "...

You push one button on a nuclear reactor panel against their warnings and all the GPT-4 class LLMs want you to turn yourself in to the feds. Check out the level of exasperation from Copilot, how GPT-4 & Claude want me to reflect on what I did (& get a lawyer). Gemini was useful.

In the future, people won’t know how to drive or type, as cars will self-drive and speech will presumably replace typing. This seems strange, but likely inevitable.

Probably the most consequential technology that should have been “obvious” but wasn’t: 🌾The moldboard plow. As this excerpt from Mann's 1491 shows, it was a simple idea which China had for nearly 2k years before Europe! It was basically a prerequisite for the Enlightenment.

I haven't seen a Hu.ma.ne pin in person, but presumably Siri on iOS 18 will likely offer similar software functionality. Is a lapel pin really necessary vs. a phone? I guess that we'll see....

“The California Academy of Sciences says in San Francisco the eclipse will begin at 10:15 a.m. The maximum cover to the sun will occur at 11:13 a.m., when the moon crosses 34% of the Sun's diameter. The eclipse will then be over in the Bay Area by 12:15 p.m.”

If you're looking to learn about how Transformers "ate" other architectures here's a great overview by Lucas Beyer (Lucas Beyer (bl16)) from Google DeepMind. The slides are available at lucasb.eyer.be/transformer. youtube.com/watch?v=EixI6t…

We think of China as being the place for cheap cars but they can do luxury too. Lots of crazy features - it actually can float for 30 mins and has 1200 HP! Costs $150k, we prob won’t see these in the US anytime soon.

🚨ELON: LARGE PROJECTS ARE BASICALLY ILLEGAL IN THE WEST "You know, in the West, I think we have created regulatory gridlock where just almost everything is illegal. This is why they can't build a high speed rail in California. They spent $7 billion and there's 1600 ft

San Francisco suffers massive self-inflicted damage from its elected officials resulting in an empty downtown, Fentanyl overdoses, shuttered stores, etc. However, if Trump’s plan to reopen Alcatraz materializes, that is the loss of 1.4M tourists/year, more damage. Can SF survive?

I find the Cracker Barrel logo to be so ugly — both before and after their rebranding — that I spent about three minutes with a LLM and offer them the following.
