April 23, 1974 – Boats illegally moored in Key West’s Garrison Bight began to be forcibly removed after a grace period ended. Only those with permits for berths at the newly built city piers were allowed to stay.

April 22, 1972 – The old Monroe General Hospital on Stock Island was being converted to offices for use by the expanding Monroe County government.

April 20, 1994 – The Monroe County Commission approved a design for the new Key West airport that was labelled by many as too “Disneyesque.” Some residents argued for an “Old Town Conch” design, but commissioners felt altering plans would be too expensive.

April 17, 1949 – The new Monroe County Beach in Key West was dedicated. Judge Thomas S. Caro was the speaker, and Frank Bentley, Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners, made the formal dedication. The County issued a $350,000 construction bond for the new beach.

April 16, 2019 – A large majority – 69% – of Key West voters said “Yes” to the city’s purchase of the Key West Citizen building on Northside Drive. The city intended to house its Community Services department there.

April 12, 1975 – The Salgado Brothers grocery at the corner of Eaton and Grinnell streets in Key West closed for good. The grocery, said to be the oldest on the island, had first opened in the 1880s.

April 9, 1974 – Packs of roaming dogs, a mix of strays and those allowed to run free by their owners, were plaguing Key West. The Humane Society had issued leash law warnings in hopes of alleviating the problem but now began to have animal wardens catch the dogs for impound.

April 5, 1994 – The City of Key West and the State of Florida filed a joint lawsuit against 21 Houseboat Row residents with the goal of evicting them. Both governments had long contended the floating neighborhood was illegally trespassing on public property.
