Substack not working with any other service like Readwise or a web clipper is annoying. I want to take insights from others and apply them to my work and they make it impossible.

Customers in PJM will start getting their first bills with new capacity charges this month. In the same month, PJM has had 9 conservation alerts compared to 1 all of last summer. Oh, and the latest capacity auction topped the previous record set in 2025.

The computational power required for new AI model training is doubling every 5 months. But, thanks to innovation in the power efficency of compute and data center construction the electricity consumption takes ~18 months to do the same double. Still, according to the IEA,

Ever wonder what a heatwave can do to wholesale prices? In the EU last month, 9 extra degrees of heat almost doubled wholesale energy prices. This is on a continent where AC use is still sporadic.

Satya’s ability to context switch between infrastructure, hardware innovation cycles, and software is crazy impressive. He’s acting as infrastructure investor and software operator at the same time. Two vastly different mindsets and he’s switching in and out of both here.

Jefferies’ forecast for utility-scale battery systems are 30% above the current BNEF outlook and they believe that might be conservative. They’ve raised their 2026 outlook despite headlines due to data center demand and higher than expected solar deployment post OBBB.

China grants subsidies to make power cheaper for data centers and chip manufacturers. They realize cheap and abundant power is key to winning the AI race. We should do the same.

Only 33 counties account for 72% of US data center capacity. Data centers require access to cheap power, connectivity and a lot of land. Three inputs that aren’t easily changed. Only a few places fit the criteria.

Good morning from DC where we’re talking about data centers today with utilities, policymakers and executives working in the sector.

OH today: data centers vs the grid is the battle of: “move fast and break things” vs. “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”

Interesting data from the Thundersaid Energy team on where AI patents are being filed around the space. 65% of industrials claim to be developing AI in-house 15% have filed 100s patents I'm surprised at the low numbers across electrical sensors and robotics.

I’m surprised we’re not seeing more of these types of investments pop up. Amazon’s done this for shopping at licensed out the tech. Metropolis doing it for parking lots and potentially drive thru.

Great chart from the team at RMI on the cost vs. speed of putting new generation on the grid. Solar, batteries, wind, and gas lead the way. Nuclear and geothermal are green, but still costly.

Data center flexibility was a big topic at our summit this week. The IEA finds that if US data centres are flexible 1% of the time, there is enough room in the current system to integrate 70% of all data capacity through to 2035. It’s a narrative that’s counter to “the system

Great data from Shanu and an important reminder that customers don’t think in terms of inflation. Consumers compare their bills to last month and last year on a nominal basis. They see and importantly feel $100 last year and $120 this year. Using the inflation-adjusted number
