Closing in on Thanksgiving, here's an image of the Marathon Club Cheerleaders at a Thanksgiving Day Game on November 26, 1907. The Club was part of a broader strategy to instill “social uplift and physical culture” among African heritage youth across Rhode Island. #Thanksgiving

A prayer for Thanksgiving given on November 28, 1765 by Rev. Issac Touro at the newly built Synagogue in Newport, RI. The prayer was translated from Hebrew to English and printed in the Newport Mercury newspaper for all to read. #HappyThanksgiving

News article from 40 years ago highlights the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society and its installation of historic plaques throughout Rhode Island, many of which remain visible today. I had the honor of serving as a young board member. #riblackheritage #projo

For Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Weekend, we have a 1902 political statement from my family collection prepared by Newport Black leaders in response to restrictions on African heritage voting and equal rights. The statement was sent to members of the U.S. Congress.

For President's Day, which honors the birthdays of Presidents Washington and Lincoln. My paternal great-grandfather, George Luther Dalton, may have been Lincoln's doppelganger. Like Lincoln, my great-grandfather had an ancestor who served in the American Revolution. #President

In honor of Women's History Month, I proudly highlight my great-aunt, Louise Van Horne. In 1902, she broke barriers as Rhode Island's first teacher of color in public schools, inspiring generations. #WomensHistoryMonth

In the face of adversity, people stand up to be heard and fight for justice. On March 12, 1902, a courageous group of men of color sent a powerful letter to the U.S. Congress advocating for equal voting rights. This serves as a lesson for us all in the present day.

No one can erase our rich African heritage and history in America. In 1788, my ancestor, a free woman of color, courageously purchased 224 acres of land adjacent to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello plantation. monticello.org/exhibits-event…
