Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson was honoured with a sculpture in Adelaide on the 100th anniversary of his birth #OTD 16 August 1982. It sits on a pedestal in front of the Uni of Adelaide where he was Professor of Geology. On #KaurnaCointry monumentaustralia.org.au/themes/people/…

A State Government gift to The Uni of Adelaide on its 50th anniversary, the Physics Building was opened #OTD 17 August 1926. It was designed in red brick classical style by Walter H Bagot. The University is now celebrating its 150th annniversary during 2024. On #KaurnaCountry.

SA pathfinder Col William Light first ‘made land’ #OTD 18 August 1836. He left London on his ship Rapid in Feb, passed the southern side of Kangaroo Is and sailed to to a point "east of Encounter Bay" as he noted in his diary. The search for a site for the capital was on.

At last, "the greatest engineering feat of 19th century Australia" was completed. A promised communications revolution had arrived for Adelaide, SA and the other Australian colonies. The Overland Telegraph line was activated #OTD 22 August 1872. ot150.net

Col William Light sketched the early immigrants’ tent camp at Reeves Point on Kangaroo Island #OTD 22 August 1836. His ship Rapid first anchored nearby in Nepean Bay the day before. The first arrivals had been there since July 27. Watercolour completed 1839. 📸 State Library of South Australia

It’s 3 years since the Centenary Celebration for Col. Light Gardens - 1st land sales in the ‘Garden Suburb’ (a State Heritage Area) on old Grange Farm began #OTD 22 August 1921. Great to join in for the SA Heritage Council and as a Col. Light kid from 1952. On #KaurnaCountry.

Col. William Light signed his will #OTD 26 August 1839 at his newly constructed home on his land at Thebarton. Invalided by tuberculosis, he died 6 weeks later, aged 53. Sole beneficiary was his partner Maria Gandy, known quaintly as his ‘housekeeper’.

The oldest living memorial to World War I in Australia (and probably the world) was planted #OTD 29 August 1914. An English Oak, it stands proud in Creswell Gardens by the Adelaide Oval. The ceremony took place only 25 days after Britain entered the Great War. On #KaurnaCountry.

Happy 190th anniversary to the State Library of South Australia. Its predecessor, the South Australian Literary Association was formed in London #OTD 29 Aug 1834 - 2 years before colonisation. See some books donated by its reformer leader Robert Gouger in the Mortlock Chamber.

An electric light shock for Adelaide. From the railed platform beneath the flagpole on the GPO tower, Sir Charles Todd demonstrated electric light #OTD 31 August 1881. A powerful arc light fed by a dynamo turned darkness into day as far as the City Bridge. On #KaurnaCountry

Happy National Wattle Day from Kaurna Country along the Torrens/Karrawirra Parri in the Adelaide Park Lands. The first celebration of Wattle Day was held on 1 September 1910 in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. It has a lot offer as the inclusive Australia Day. #wattle

A first in Australia, Rundle Mall was opened by Premier Don Dunstan #OTD 1 Sep 1976. Champagne bubbled from the 19C fountain newly placed at the Gawler Place intersection. It’s now in front of the historic -885 Adelaide Arcade.

Its centrepiece, the 1915 Dardanelles Monument is now on ANZAC Centenary Walk. On #KaurnaCountry. 📸 State Library of South Australia

Fellers of Australier, Blokes an' coves an' coots, Shift yer --- carcases, Move yer --- boots.’ The larrikin poet CJ Dennis was born in Auburn* SA #otd 7 Sep 1876. His 1915 book of poems, The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke’ was a huge hit in WWI.
