Food policies are political and decided by government. Healthcare access and rights, insurance policies, and much more are also affected. Food is political. Health is political. So yes, it makes sense to talk about these things and remind folks to vote. That’s all.✌🏽

Suicide is VERY real in the Black community. I know it feels like a tough thing to talk about but if we don't talk about it more, people will continue to feel alone. EVERYONE please drop mental health resources in this thread, including local ones. Please share.

Unpopular opinion here… but anyone who chooses to make unsolicited comments towards someone’s food or body/appearance, speaks more to their own unresolved issues than the person they’re making comments toward. 1/7

“Fat actors deserve to work and embody roles that reflect the experiences of their lives, and fat people deserve to see themselves onscreen”—Great piece in Cosmopolitan

Love this article about how processed foods shouldn’t be demonized and can be part of a well-rounded diet. Thank you thenutritiontea for writing this!

In an acute visit, a patient seemingly out of nowhere said, “I know my weight is probably affecting this too.” I paused, “Actually, I don’t think this problem has anything to do with weight so I wasn’t going to bring it up, but I also don’t see weight as an indicator of health.”

The NYC Council is considering a law to prohibit fatphobia in housing + the workplace. Yesterday the council heard testimony on it. It lasted 1.5 hours and was very interesting. Activists, doctors, everyday New Yorkers testified. Here’s what they said…

This! Restrictive diets are so harmful to managing PCOS . Consistent nourishment (including carbs!), adequate sleep, hydration, stress management, and gentle movement is much more effective in the long-term.

From the article: "The US lacks universal health care and has higher caloric intake, more guns, more drugs and higher rates of child poverty, among other differences." But sure, let's just keep blaming the food edition.cnn.com/2023/06/01/hea…

The weight loss industry depends on a narrative where they get credit for the short-term weight loss, but blame their clients for the almost inevitable long-term regain. This contributes to stereotypes about fat people, encourages weight cycling, and is an absolute con job.

I need people to understand that "ob*sity-related" diseases are diseases that people of all sizes get, that get called "ob*sity-related" when fat people have them. Also, they are also typically weight-cycling-related diseases and weight-stigma- related diseases.

When providers reassure clients with eating disorders that they won’t get fat in treatment, it’s reinforcing the idea that being fat is the worst thing they can be. We can do a whole lot better than use fatphobia to comfort our clients.

I’ve been meaning to do this for a while and excited to be working together with Chelsea to create a space for Jewish folks in eating disorder recovery that could benefit from support around the holidays. 💗
