Hardy Amies’s autobiography Still Here is a fascinating account of a life in fashion that began with his mother’s work for an Edwardian couturier & culminated in his designs for the Queen. Whilst known for his tailoring, this 1965 gown showcases his more dramatic ensembles Royal Collection Trust
Just a little understated thing to round off the day. Queen Maud of Norway certainly knew a thing or two about statement dressing & this feels, to me, like her halcyon days of dress. It dates to c1912, from the higher waistline & fishtail skirt. Beads galore nasjonalmuseet
There is something beautifully optimistic about this homemade dress. Dating to 1947, it was created in a period still dominated by rationing and yet it has an eye to Parisian style with echoes of the fuller skirts and neat, contrasting details Leeds Museums & Galleries #fashionhistory
The theme of Sleeping Beauties has been explored in different museums this year, of garments uninhabited & fragile that survive as the ghostly outlines of lives once lived. This 1760s Spanish bodice is a remnant. What stories are woven invisibly into its shiny brocade? The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Chuffed to watch embroiderers Christy Baty and Erin Moody matching colour, sizing silver-gilt thread & pearls for repro of Folger Shakespeare Library V.a.93 MS for Maurice of Nassau! #EstherInglis #embroidery #bindings
A trio of Regency belles, all in a row. In Pride & Prejudice this might be the Meryton Ball with Lizzy, Jane & Charlotte surveying the aristocrats but the gowns are quite fancy. Maybe it is snooty Caroline Bingley & pals instead. I can almost hear Mrs Bennet shrieking #DARmuseum
This is something to celebrate, a new exhibition opening in June OKC Museum of Art dedicated to costume designer Edith Head. Her work featured in movies galore, not least those starring Grace Kelly. This costume worn by Kelly in 1954 Rear Window, Collection of Motion Picture Costume Design
Appreciating the value of cloth was taken for granted for much of the #c19th . This luminous floral brocade comes from a much earlier garment of the #c18th but was #refashioned into a different style sometime perhaps half a century later. John Bright Collection #fashionhistory
Bonnet, silk taffeta, probably American, c1860. Via LACMA collections. #bonnet #1860s #dresshistory #fashionhistory
If your evening consists of a rollicking party complete with music & dancing & a general knees up then hurrah! If it is more in the vein of a cosy film, wrapped in a blanket then also hurrah! Either way this mid #1920s evening dress is a lovely accompaniment Philadelphia Museum of Art
Gauzy white puff sleeves feature both in this surviving #1820s dress and a slightly earlier fashion plate, drawing on Gothic fictions and Tudor aesthetics here. Self decorated hems and gathered bodices are replicated too, from image to object KSU Museum #fashionhistory
Louise Dahl-Wolfe photographed #Dior ’s 1951 l’Autriche gown with its sculpted lines and two tones of fabric in typical mid century pose. A sleek and chic dress to help us over the middle week bump Royal Ontario Museum #chinasilkmuseum #fashionhistory
