RIP Tootie Heath (1935-2024). Sad news. The master drummer died yesterday, 88 yrs old. One of the very best drummers & sharpest, funniest storytellers of his generation. (A key person in terms of pushing the project that became I Called Him Morgan in a certain direction.) ❤️

Slightly fascinating how people in US often are kind of surprised when they realize their legendary musicians many times were treated way better abroad than in US. Looking fw to read this book.

RIP John Sinclair (1941-2024). Warm guy with great observation skills. Interviewed him 2003 when I made a doc about Albert Ayler. I recall he told me about his & Leni’s “pilgrimage” from Detroit to meet Al & Don in their Cleveland (Shaker Heights) family home Christmas time 1965.

Happy birthday to one of the greatest. ❤️ This album gets me every time. A genuine emotional roller coaster. (Five years ago Gil Scott-Heron’s estate wanted me to direct a documentary about him. Wherever that project is today I hope and wish a heartfelt doc will be made.)
