Great piece. I do love volunteering and service but wish there were more opportunities to make those become real career paths for biologists!

This is such an important article!! I personally ran into this roadblock when I was trying to bust into the conservation field, and it played a huge role in my shift towards education.

'“It is a luxury to take an unpaid position and still support yourself,” ... That luxury ... has profound effects on who ends up in a career in conservation and how we solve today’s environmental challenges.' Worth a read for those who lead conservation projects.

“Moving up the ranks often requires a succession of volunteer gigs, low-paid positions, and temporary roles with no career security for years.”

Thorough & excellent piece on the issue of unpaid gigs in conservation. There have been improvements but we have a LONG way to go.
