World trade passing the Staples Mill ⁦Amtrak⁩ station just outside Richmond Virginia. Shipping by freight rail is certainly more fuel efficient and with far fewer emissions than trucking.

The materials, the scale, the narrow roads, the focus on walkability, we had it all. The abundance movement should look to the past to take inspiration…

Guy sitting in padded chair in motorized, ~2.5 ton mobile living room operating in a system optimized for his convenience is complaining about people taking active, low impact transportation. When you’re accustomed to privilege, anything less than everything feels like injustice.

Vietnamese architecture is having a special moment right now. The marriage of greenery and terra cotta (or concrete in other properties), is one of the most pleasing built combinations

I really dig this setback, garden wall/courtyard and entrance. Really nice solution in an urban environment to create a protected garden and buffer/privacy from sidewalk, while still shaping space and creating a usable transition space.

Arriving to Munster… seems like Denmark, but it’s Germany. The land of cars… and I see bicycles everywhere. All Ages Abilities. Next week at Int. Summit Health & Cities in Hanover. Love the mix. Good cities make healthy lifestyle the easier option. For everyone, 8 and 80.

I think about this all the time. Even basic painting, cleaning, small DIY upkeep jobs. Would be a weird historical anomaly to have a bunch of people living in homes that are decaying around them due to lack of skills/ability to pay someone else

This is a decent point, even in the US where we tend to be more utilitarian in so many ways. But even here the little things in cities matter, sometimes a lot. Because they add up:

Walkable community nature integrated with density is a winner! (Not sure I love the photo example from Bath UK, though. The Royal Crescent - at top of image - is way overrated IMO & does not provide the kind of usable city nature that we need.)

I'm 61 and over the past two months, my 401(k) has lost 25 percent of its value. I'm always happy to contribute to the greater good, but can someone please explain to me how this helps anyone?
