To celebrate #WindrushDay my film of Coming to England was shown to around 800 schoolchildren at ⁦BFI⁩. Most of them had read the book and loved it❤️

#InALeagueOfHerOwn includes Effa Manley's negotiations that resulted in Larry Doby becoming the 2nd Negro Leaguer to play MLB, and the 1st to play in the AL. She also became the 1st Negro League team owner to be compensated by a MLB team for the loss of talent.

Effa Manley negotiated on behalf of the Eagles. And then used her portion of the proceeds to buy herself a mink coat. 30 years later, she was still rocking it at the Negro Leagues reunion. My fictionalized account is in my novel #InALeagueOfHerOwn.

OTD - July 5, 1947 - Larry Doby became the first Black player in the American League. Despite the daily impacts of racism, Doby went on to be the first Black player to hit a home run in the World Series en route to his Hall of Fame career. He deserves to be celebrated @mlb

Today, we celebrate the 78th anniversary of Larry Doby breaking the AL color barrier. Facing the same challenges as Jackie Robinson, and debuting just a few months later, Doby's courage and bravery is more than worth celebrating. 👏 #GuardsBall

Oh goody, another cause to campaign for: let's make #DobyDay official. I guess it's time for MLB to receive another round of Effa Manley inspired letters.
