'Gold, the Sudanese people’s most lucrative asset, is mined from under their feet and flown over their heads to the Middle East, then traded for weapons to rain down on them as they starve.' This week's column theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

#COP29 saw a very disappointing annual funding pledge of USD 300 billion by high-income countries to help lower-income countries take #ClimateAction, less than 1/4 of the minimum needed to reduce carbon emissions, build resilience to climate change, & compensate for loss & damage

Adequate financing is crucial to protect the rights of millions, especially historically marginalized & frontline communities. But the massive gap between what’s needed & what’s been pledged means govts are not equipped to fight #climatechange

amnestypress (@amnestypress) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Currently, most climate finance from high-income to lower-income countries is in the form of loans, many of which have high interest rates. Without debt relief, new finance will likely repay existing debts, not support climate efforts. #debtjustice for #climatejustice

Governments must also put measures in place to stop the biggest polluters contributing to climate harms. This means ensuring private corporations act in line with their #humanrights responsibilities; and the richest are adequately taxed #makepolluterspay

Mexico's legal position on the interpretation and scope of Article 51 of the UN Charter, related to invocations of self-defense. More of this, please. (tl;dr: The use of force against non-State actors on the territory of another State without the latter's consent are unlawful.)

Less than a half-hour’s drive from the charm of central Damascus, the suburb of Darayya feels a world away. It shows how much time and aid are needed if ruined areas are to become livable again: a lesson as obvious as it is ignored by those pushing returns to Syria. 🧵
