While USA doesnt have VAT each state has "Sales Tax". California Sales tax is 7.25% which means goods for $70 are actually goods for $64.90 - a reasonable 25% markup by the store Cost of Goods = $48.69 Profit = $16.20 Bear in mind Min wage in California is $16.50

So in the hour it took this store to lose $100 and make $16.20 profit on a sale of $70 Newsom Govt = $5 Cashier = $16.50 Store = -$83.80 But wait theres more, you need to factor in Rent, Store Fittings, Electricity, Security, Insurance So the $16.20 profit is much less.

I fully support Minimum wage here is an example of how it doesnt work... In Cali under Gavin Newsom housing is crazy priced so even someone earning $184/day will struggle over a month to pay rent, transport and food. This shows a states failure to make Min wage a living wage.

A min wage by contrast in a city with subsidised housing, transport, healthcare ensures that someone earning $16.50 is actually able to live on such a wage A capable govt doing what it should would bring down a minimum wage by providing services that reduce the cost of living

For example in much of California under Governor Gavin Newsom the average monthly rental for a 1 bedroom non shared apartment is $2000 - $3500 a month Meaning even if you work 5 days a week for 8 hours plus 1 hour overtime you could not live on your own if you are being paid min wage

In the South African context where Min wage is R28.79 per hour (R1150 a week or R4600) A single taxi is between R15 - R19 or more (Some take 6 a day to and from work) = R1200 Food for one person a day can be R60 a day (two meals) = R1200 Rent (1 Room in a Township) = R1100
