I have been involved with athletic development for over ten years through my hockey training company. Although that business primarily focuses on online coaching, I've enjoyed my transition to coaching kids in recent years. This has sparked a deep interest in child coaching,

Basketball is reaction - not predetermined decision making The more decisions you are forced to make in a workout/practice, the better. Less “dribble to that cone and make a move” More “If you beat the on ball defender, what are you going to do against the help side?”

This is why it is important for coaches to consider moving away from using internal feedback, as frequently seen within the dominant approach.

Brian McCormick The minute you use punishment to teach discipline, you are failing as a coach. Punishments are short terms and only bring resentment. Useless. Instead, establish rules, work on engagement and enjoyment. Those are fuel for athletes.

Wicked little secret in skilled agility: it’s not about making the fastest decision, nor in moving with the prettiest biomechanics or technical model…it’s about coordinating the most functional movement solution that fits the nature of the unfolding problem.

Years ago kids learned to play without coaches - things you never see if a group of kids play on their own without adults : warm ups, dribbling around cones, drills, standing in lines, substitutes, 10-0 score line (they change the teams to make them equal) ‘No coach > Bad coach’

The team does not lose, the player does not fail, because of their inability to follow the whiteboard or orders to a T. They lose because they cannot adapt successfully to the challenges of the match, of the opponent.

As a youth coach, your goal should be to make your practices, workouts, or training sessions the highlight of your athletes’ day. They should look forward to them and they should leave excited and motivated to do more. Love hearing how much players are enjoying and engaging.

“Play is how children naturally develop. It’s how they learn to push the limits and deal with fear, to solve problems, and to deal with anger and get along with playmates. "Take it away, and they’re just not going to be prepared for the stresses of life.” -Peter Gray
