The harms of mass incarceration do not just affect incarcerated people. It has far-reaching consequences that traumatize far too many Americans.

To be clear, I am retiring from the Executive Director position. I intend to spend (some of) my retirement continuing to fight for Illinois prisoners. So, if anyone from the IDOC is reading this, it is too soon to celebrate!

In every part of the US, incarceration is out of step with the rest of the world. Even “progressive” states–like California & Illinois–have higher incarceration rates than countries with authoritarian governments. So much for the "land of the free."

The carceral system clearly does not care about "reforming" children. If it did, why are so many people who were arrested at 15 or younger stuck in the system?

Under the money bond system, detention hearings were brief. The Pretrial Fairness is ensuring that hearings are more robust. Loyola Chicago Center for Criminal Justice found the length of detention hearings increased after implementation to a median length of 10–30 minutes.
