Each cortical area in the mammalian brain is composed of canonical, repeatable circuit elements. Distinct connectivity patterns underlie differences in response patterns/function between areas observed during behaviour. i.e., the variability is all in the connectome.

You do patch seq/transcriptomics in two pyramidal cells with an obvious different morphology and different input resistance/rheobase/adaptation. The transcriptomics profiles are indistinguishable.
