Climate denialism is just the first step as the crisis mounts. As tragedies grow and worsen, the Right will reframe it through a lens that blames shadowy forces and traitors, creating an environment where they can serve their benefactors and grow their own power.

As more people suffer from climate change, the debate will never touch on making necessary changes but instead revolve around who deserves resources and safety. It starts with immigrants and political enemies, but it will expand over time as the circle of protection shrinks.

The GOP will blame Democrats and sinister forces, but it will also take on a moralistic tone and religious implications. Disasters will be blamed on supernatural evil and the consequences seen as moral judgments by God, meaning the victims deserved their fates.

Rather than address the root causes of climate change, which would require changing our neoliberal capitalist system, what we’ll see is an internal war between populations driven by racism and xenophobia, and even potentially war against external enemies to secure resources.

Sadly, this is all incredibly predictable and will follow the same lines the Right has always trafficked. Unless we have frank and difficult discussions about this crisis, we are going to go down a very, very bad road that I don’t think most people are ready for.

I think some hoped eventually denialism would give way to consensus, but that isn’t the nature of power. Climate change is getting worse and the reaction is Ecofascism on the Right. What we’re dealing with will only accelerate as that grows and becomes more pressing.

Attacks on democracy, radicalization, the worldwide authoritarian movement gaining momentum. These things will only be supercharged by the consequences of climate change. And what we’re seeing come into focus right now is only a preview of what could happen.
