Two things I wish I could go back in time & tell my younger screenwriting self. 1:Writing roles that get actors excited about playing them is at least 80 percent of the game. 2:On a feature, even if it's your original script, ultimately you work for the director. Don't fight it.

The hardest truth about breaking into TV writing? 'Good' isn't good enough anymore. Your sample needs to be BLAZING HOT. Not 'shows promise.' Not 'solid.' The kind of script that makes people stop what they're doing and call you immediately.

In every writer’s room, around ep. 7, writers will say: “Hey, let’s see how we got here,” and they’ll start to build a flashback episode about “backstory,” or some character will return home so they can experience “backstory.” When this happens in your writers room… resist.

I personally wish the Nicholl Fellowship would change the "$25,000 lifetime earning from screenwriting" cap. Excluding writers assistants who got a single freelance episode shuts out people really poised to benefit from a win!

Hard truth for writers, especially TV: The streaming bubble created a false perception that a job/career was much more obtainable than it is. It’s not ever been easy, nor even likely. If you love it you have no choice but to pursue regardless. If you don’t, spare yourself.

Sigh. Time for a thread. Feels like every few weeks somebody announces on here or on reddit, with utter authority, that all/most contests are bullshit and have never resulted in anything. I disagree and give examples. And they either disregard me or discount my examples. 1/

I always say that when trying to break into Hollywood, you've got to just throw spaghetti at the wall and see which strands stick. Coverfly going under just means that strand got unstuck. Keep chucking that pasta and writing great stuff. That's all you can do!
