In Edinburgh we got cross-party support (sans Tories) for my motion calling on Scottish Government to deliver their pledge to introduce free bus travel for asylum seekers at the last Full Council - really hope parliament follows in our steps today!

🟢Yes: 68 🔴No: 27 The Scottish Parliament, including the SNP, has just voted for our motion that bus travel should be free for people seeking asylum in Scotland! After opposing the policy in August, the Scottish Government must now confirm how they will progress the scheme.

Reactions to this are depressingly predictable. Politician safety is a real issue and it is entirely appropriate that cllrs should be offered protection. Disagreement and protest is important, but death threats and harassment should be unacceptable.

It's sickening. It's frightening. If we still believe in democracy, in human rights, in climate action, in justice for the occupied and the marginalised, then we need to reach out to those he threatens the most. They are the people with whom we need a 'special relationship'.
