PhD candidate Jukes Liu (they/she)'s paper on the 2016 synchronous retreat of SE #Greenland's peripheral marine-terminating glaciers is now published as an accepted article in AGU (American Geophysical Union)'s Geophysical Research Letters! Check-out the article at agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/20… & my summary thread...

Jukes Liu (they/she) AGU (American Geophysical Union) Jukes applied her novel, automated terminus mapping method to the USGS Landsat 8 time series for 135 glaciers not connected to the ice sheet (based on the Randolph Glacier Inventory). The open code is at github.com/julialiu18/aut… & described in ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/93491…

56 of 135 glaciers in SE Greenland retreated anomalously in 2016. The map outlines the retreated glaciers in orange & the others in blue. Retreat was a step (type C1), increase in rate (type C2), or a combo of the two (C1+C2=C3). This level of synchronicity is unprecedented

What drove the retreat? Likely surface melt! 2016 had anomalously high surface meltwater runoff (panel a). The meltwater runoff anomaly isn't too different for retreated glaciers (panel b) but they had shallower slopes (panel c), making them more susceptible to melt effects.

In contrast with the ice sheet's outlet glaciers, retreat doesn't seem to be triggered by ocean temp change (blue lines), potentially b/c these glaciers don't penetrate deep enough into the ocean. But runoff can wedge open crevasses & increase submarine melting, driving retreat.

Great work by former MS student Kate Bollen (now USGS) hot off the presses! Timeseries of ice discharge to the ocean by 585 #Greenland glaciers disconnected from the ice sheet estimated from NASA JPL velocity, USGS Landsat width, & inferred thickness. How much ice has been lost?

Leaving out seasonality from models of ocean-terminating glaciers can bias projections! In our new paper, we model a glacier that flows into the ocean in two ways. First, we force the terminus to retreat and wiggle back and forth seasonally, just like real glaciers.

2022 field work at #SitKusa/#TurnerGlacier just wrapped, thanks to Ellyn Enderlin, Jukes Liu (they/she), Yoram Terleth, and mountaineer Suz Detweiler. Super successful and our network continues going strong. Reminds me how much I love the intensity, creativity, and team work of the field.

Ah the week before AGU… The wonderful time of year when I frantically write hundreds of lines of code to make beautiful presentation figures, only for me to have absolutely no clue what the scripts actually do when I come back to them
