Super excited to be running this with @itspangler for American Association of Geographers! Thinking through the hows/whys of research & writing seems pedantic but once you start you realize how many of processes get in the way doing work. It’ll be a nice mix between therapy and practical solutions too!

We have a poverty of language when it comes to describing maps...often failing to go beyond synonyms of "beautiful"/"good" or "ugly"/"bad"

It is unfortunate that not enough data visualization practitioners remember that design is an act of rendering care. Sure, worrying about which chart transfers data more efficiently into someone's brain can be construed as "care." But good visualization accomplishes more:

Fun fact is I actually studied the history of the dissertation as part of my dissertation and they were never meant to be there fully-fledged academic pieces! They were supposed to be practice (with support), to help someone do work on their own. And now they're sooo high stakes.

So happy to see American Association of Geographers working on this! It’s not perfect (nothing ever is) but it’s a significant step forward for us an an org—one that I hope we continue for future conferences
