This is my new favorite game: internet sleuths find who on the internet AI ripped off its answers from! I’m gonna call it “Where in the World is Google Plagiarizing From!”

Nine lies, half-truths, broken promises and evasions from OpenAI— and the most important lessons we should draw from them. • OpenAI called itself open, and traded on the notion of being open, but even as early as May 2016 knew that the name was misleading. And Altman himself

They didn't automate art & writing, it's easier to steal tons of creative data, condense it into a model then pretend the model is capable of art & writing when in actual sense the models are plagiarising a ton of creative works without any form of compensation nor attribution.

This generative model era is just full of extremely wealthy corporations, stealing tons of data, compressing it into statistical models, stamping "intelligence" on it then shoving it down everyone's throat that never asked for such always-on-spyware-like software baked in the OS.

"And, what the computer people don’t realize–or they don’t care–is we’re dancing animals. You know; we love to move around. And we’re not supposed to dance at all anymore." Kurt Vonnegut, from a 2005 interview (h/t Matt Civico)

If creative jobs didn't exist in the first place then that creates a paradox: OpenAI wouldn't be here & she wouldn't be saying that. OpenAI wouldn't exist without scraping the creative communities labor.

I was delighted to write 3 stories in The Hollywood Reporter’s latest Sustainability Issue. Climate change is the biggest news story of our lifetimes. Figuring out how to cover it at a Hollywood trade takes creative leaders, like Julian Sancton, who edited this issue, and Kelsey Stefanson, who designed it.

The pieces I wrote include this one on the removal of the Into the Wild bus from the backcountry after people died trying to reach it. Sean Penn, who directed the film, reflects on its unintended impacts on Alaska. hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-f…

And this interview with Hillary Clinton, in which she talks about her initiative Too Small to Fail, which is enlisting Hollywood’s creative community to help people make connections between children’s mental and physical health and the environment. hollywoodreporter.com/business/busin…

Does no one realize how insane and significant this is? It's only going to get worse. "Rather than declining, its emissions grew 13% in 2023 over the year before. Compared to its baseline year of 2019, emissions have soared 48%." apnews.com/article/climat…

I spoke with Tunde Adebimpe about being a TWISTERS "weather weenie," the songs he *didn't* sing in RACHEL GETTING MARRIED, TV on the Radio's 2006 Letterman spot, a solo album (!) & TVOTR performing again (!), and, of course, Phish's "Golden Age" cover. hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-f…

Another fantastic story by the great Wayne Lawson, who has been on a hot streak at VANITY FAIR, gracing the public at large with the incredible, dishy yarns he once reserved for cocktail hour.

This essay on AI is almost cathartic in the way that it captures and confirms so eloquently how so many of us feel. I think Mr. Chiang has gifted us with something that will be referenced and talked about for a long time. Send it to everyone you know.

Ted Chiang just wrote a mic drop, profoundly thoughtful and well-informed essay on AI, art and all its issues. Add to his other two essays on AI and you’ve got a killer must-read troika for the Labor Day weekend. Maybe ⁦Oprah Winfrey⁩ should check it out… newyorker.com/culture/the-we…

This isn't, "We're fine with AI." It's, "F*ck you if you aren't." And despite so many people with disabilities speaking out against generative AI in creativity, some are still propping them up as human shields to try and dodge legitimate criticisms. It's gross.

People aren't carefully rewording the definition of art in order to exclude AI, they're just defining it the way it's always been defined, as a uniquely human thing. It's AI folks who are attempting to redefine it to justify themselves, not the other way around.
